For 20 years the Extremely Large Telescope (ELT), the largest telescope on Earth, has democratized access to the heavens for a planet of observers. It has placed the universe on display with unprecedented detail since it achieved first light in 2028. The ELT is capable of seeing more of the sky and delivering observations with more clarity than any instrument before it, but it is what’s not visible to everyone that will change the world.
